What to Expect From The Annuity Couple

Income for life, with the details explained.

Some annuities offer lifetime income through optional income riders, subject to contract terms and possible fees. Fixed and fixed indexed annuities can also protect against market downturns, unlike portfolios exposed to market losses. Withdrawal limits and insurer risk still matter.

Costs in plain English.

Many annuities have no annual advisory fee, compared with an investment advisor who may charge around 1% of assets managed each year. These are different services, and costs vary. The issuing insurer pays Angie a commission. Riders, surrender charges and other contract costs can still apply, and access to your money is limited by the contract. We explain the trade-offs before you decide.

If you are 59 to 72 and your household has at least $250,000 in liquid investable assets, excluding your home, this review may be a fit. Some annuities can provide lifetime payments, including through an income rider. When income starts, how it is calculated, any rider fee and how withdrawals affect it depend on the contract. An income benefit is not the same as cash you can withdraw all at once.

Many annuities have no annual advisory fee. If you purchase an annuity, the issuing insurer pays Angie a commission. An investment advisor may charge around 1% of assets managed annually for a different set of services. Annuity riders, surrender charges and other costs can still apply, and access to your money is limited. Compare the whole contract.

Fixed and fixed indexed annuities can protect against market losses under their contract terms. Variable annuities can lose value in the market. Protection does not remove insurer risk, inflation risk or limits on withdrawals.

Be cautious if someone skips the surrender schedule, cannot explain rider fees, suggests putting all your savings in an annuity, or rushes you to sign. Ask how much you can withdraw, what happens if your plans change, and how the person recommending it is paid. Angie will tell you when an annuity does not fit.

That depends on your accounts and your needs. Before moving money, compare existing benefits, withdrawal rules, any surrender charges and the costs of the new contract. Review tax questions with your tax professional. The first conversation does not commit you to moving anything.

The review is free. If you purchase an annuity, the issuing insurer pays Angie a commission. Many annuities have no annual advisory fee, but rider fees, surrender charges and limits on access to your money can still apply. Ask Angie to explain compensation and all contract costs before you make a decision.
